Widows Ministry
There are usually 20-30 widows that are a part of this ministry. They have little means of support, so they gratefully receive their weekly gift of rice and beans Although some of the ladies may live with their family, most of them are responsible for their own well-being. Many have lived long lives and suffer from the ailments of old age but without the medications and surgeries that would make life easier and more bearable for seniors. Most of these ladies regularly attend the Tuesday morning prayer meeting that lasts from 6 o'clock in the morning until 12 o'clock noon. They pray for their families and all in need at the Light & Peace Missions. They are always happy to visit with the mission teams that provide lunch and craft activities after Sunday morning church.
Life for our widows isn't easy. Very few people in Haiti have anything close to indoor plumbing, and the neighborhood latrine is usually down an alley and around the corner somewhere. The middle-of-the-night visit to the bathroom is facilitated by a chamber pot under the bed. The morning cup of coffee or tea has to wait until after water has been carried from the local well and the charcoal fire behind their tiny house has been lit. Most of the time it’s just easier to have a slice of bread immersed in canned condensed milk for breakfast. Later, around noon, the lady of the house begins to cook the rice and beans which provide the nourishment for the day.
Our Dayspring mission teams loved entertaining our widows.
Life is hard for everyone in Haiti, but especially if you’re older and alone.
The Apostle Paul says, “Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need. The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day to pray and to ask God for help.” 1 Timothy 5:3&5
Dayspring considers it a privilege to help our widows who are definitely in need.
